BENEO launches new ingredient for sugar reduction

BENEO-scL85 provides new interesting opportunities for sugar replacement while also contributing dietary fibres

BENEO has expanded its range of functional carbohydrates with the new BENEO-scL85 short-chain fructooligosaccharide (scFOS) offering new opportunities for food manufacturers working with sugar reduction.

Globally, sugar reduction is an important area of focus for consumers with new figures showing that more than 1 in 2 consumers (57%) state that “low in sugar” claims influence their purchasing decisions (1). Furthermore, consumer studies show that when choosing foods with lower content of sugar, it is important to the consumer that the difference from the “normal” product is not too big particularly in terms of taste and texture (2).

Through the addition of scFOS to its portfolio, BENEO opens the door for more customers to serve the “low in sugar” trend through new product development or re-formulation of existing products.

scFOS is a fibre derived from beet sugar that offers a mild sweet taste, good solubility and natural credentials that can contribute to improved taste and texture, as well as possibilities for bulking, in applications such as bakery, dairy, and cereals. Produced in Germany in a dedicated production facility, the new ingredient is available for BENEO’s customers globally to buy now as a syrup.

Replacing sugar with use of scFOS offers the extra benefit of added dietary fibres to the food product which improves the nutritional profile. This allows manufacturers to achieve a better score for front-of pack nutrition labelling systems worldwide.
