PALATINOSE™ isomaltulose is a functional carbohydrate purely based on sucrose from sugar beet. It is made by an enzymatic rearrangement of the glycosidic bond between glucose and fructose making it more stable than sucrose. PALATINOSE™ has a mild, natural sweetness which is approximately 50% of that of sucrose and it is considered toothfriendly. Being a slowly digestible carbohydrate, it provides the full carbohydrate energy in a more balanced way.
Contrary to high glycaemic carbohydrates which are absorbed at the beginning of the intestine, PALATINOSE™ is the only fully available carbohydrate that is absorbed slowly and throughout the entire small intestine. This way, PALATINOSE™ provides the body with the same amount of carbohydrate energy as sucrose, but the energy is released more slowly and gradually. This results in a lower blood glucose peak and a stretched blood glucose curve and therefore at prolonged and more balanced energy supply compared to sugar. Furthermore, PALATINOSE™ supports fat oxidation to occur at a higher level which can allow the body’s own carbohydrate storage to be spared for higher levels of endurance. This makes it an ideal carb for athletes.
Besides providing sustained energy and balancing blood glucose levels, PALATINOSE™ also offers potential in relation to weight management. The blood glucose response effect of PALATINOSE™ resulting in the body releasing only a reduced amount of insulin, has a positive effect on the entire metabolism. This means that fat can be used and burnt for energy supply. In a study on overweight participants with insulin resistance, consumption of meals containing PALATINOSE™ not only proved to result in lower rises in blood glucose and a lower daily insulin level, but it also showed an increase in fat burning up to 18%.
