Infant formula are advanced milk-based foods for infants used as a substitute/complement for breast milk. These formulas include various components such as essential minerals for the healthy development of the infants. Naturally, formulations dedicated to such a sensitive population (0 to 6 month) with their special dietary needs, vulnerability to metal vagrants and inability or difficulty to absorb several nutrients, are subject to highly regulated, controlled, and stringent standards.
High purity of minerals is essential in infant formulas. We supply a line of ultra-pure mineral salts from Jost Chemical with impurity levels much lower than the USP/EP/FCC monographs. The ultra-pure products also meet European Regulation 231/2012 and the expected ICH and USP elemental impurity guidelines with a maximum of 1 ppm for Pb, As and Cd, and a maximum of 0.1 ppm for Hg. Moreover, the ultra-pure line is low in aluminium.
Further to heavy metals and aluminium another concern in infant nutrition is chlorinated compounds, which is why Jost Chemical also manufactures the Infant Pure low chlorate product line, ideal for infant and follow-on formulas. This line is characterised by:
The low chlorate Infant Pure line assists customers to comply with EU 2020/685.
Jost mineral salts are fully reacted which is important to avoid formulation stability problems, inaccurate ingredient declarations on the finished product label, post blending issues and packaging issues. In addition, it is possible to counteract consumption / digestion / absorption issues.
The mineral salts have a consistent and homogeneous particle size. Particle size homogeneity is important for infant formulas since it can impact the formulation homogeneity. A higher homogeneity and stability will also conduct to a higher assimilation of the mineral salt by the infant. Moreover, an appropriate particle size can help keep insoluble salts suspended in liquid and eludes the sensory detection in mouth.
