Sweetening excipients are important for making dietary supplements and functional foods more palatable. Alsiano offers a wide range of sweeteners not only providing sweetness and taste masking, but also contributing other functionalities. They can also for instance act as fillers and binders.
We supply isomalt, maltitol, erythritol and xylitol for nutraceutical preparations such as tablets, capsules, sachets, effervescent tablets, lozenges, chewables and liquid formulations.
Isomalt is a naturally sourced sugar replacer and bulk sweetener derived exclusively from sugar beet. It has an organoleptic profile very similar to sugar with approx. half the sweetness of sucrose and almost no cooling effect. Combined with high-intensity sweeteners, isomalt can generate a synergistic sweetness profile without producing any bad taste or aftertaste. Furthermore, isomalt is very low-hydroscopic making it well-suited for lozenges formulations.
Besides bringing sweetness and taste masking, isomalt is excellent for use as a filler-binder in direct compression and powder mixes and can also function as a glidant, improving flow of powders in the production process.
Erythritol is a sugar-free, zero calorie bulk sweetener with taste and functionality close to sucrose. It is derived from plant sugar that is fermented, and has the highest digestive tolerance compared to other polyols. This means that it is less likely to cause digestive problems such as bloating, flatulence, and diarrhea, even at a high dose. What is more, erythritol does not raise blood glucose or insulin levels.
Erythritol adds smoothness and body to formulations, it provides a cool mouthfeel and masks off-flavours. It is excellent as a tablet filler and offers high processing stability in terms of acid and heat and low hygroscopicity. We supply erythritol in different grades including for direct compression.
Erythritol is excellent for solid dosage formulations such as chewable and swallowable tablets, granulated powders and lozenges, and liquid dosage formulations such as syrups.
Xylitol polyol is a sugar–free bulk sweetener with high natural sweetness. With 2.4 kcal per gram, xylitol is a low-calorie sweetener. Xylitol is a fine flavour enhancer providing a pleasant taste, smooth mouthfeel, and texture in addition to intense cooling effect which is excellent for masking off-taste.
Direct compression (DC) production methodology requires excipients of high quality and functionality. Alsiano offers direct compression (DC) of xylitol for filling or binding applications. Xylitol can contribute where simple tableting applications are required and is an excellent excipient for high-quality chewable lozenges or tablets, with a pleasant taste and texture
Maltitol sugar-free bulk sweetener is a sugar alcohol which can replace sucrose 1:1. Low calorie of just 2.4 kcal per gram, Maltitol provides a pleasant taste, smooth mouthfeel, and nice texture.
Maltitol powder is a good filler/binder bringing high stability to formulations thanks to a high chemical stability and low hygroscopicity. Other benefits include good humidity, moisture control, film forming properties, and Maltitol can also be used for coating.
We supply Maltitol in different grades/particle sizes well-suited for applications including swallowable tablets, effervescent tablets, chewable tablets, and medicated confectionery.
We supply REBATEN™, a range of high-intensity sweeteners based on steviol glycosides extracted from the leaves of Stevia rebaudiana. REBATEN™ 97% is approximately 200–250 times sweeter than sugar, while REBATEN™ 60% is up to 150 times sweeter than sugar. This makes steviol glycosides suitable for products where part or all of the sweetness from sugar needs to be replaced.
At typical use levels, steviol glycosides provide sweetness while adding very few calories, despite having an energy value of 2.1 kcal/g. They are highly stable across a wide range of pH levels and under various light and heat conditions. They are also water-soluble and non-fermentable and are therefore non-cariogenic. Steviol glycosides are generally well tolerated and do not typically cause the digestive discomfort associated with other sugar alternatives.
REBATEN™ 97% can be used across a wide range of food applications. It may also be used as a sweetener and taste-masking agent in dietary supplements. The product complies with the relevant JECFA specifications and applicable EU requirements for steviol glycosides. In the EU, Steviol glycosides from stevia are designated as E 960a and are permitted for use as a sweetener in specified food categories, subject to the applicable conditions and maximum permitted levels.
REBATEN™ 97% may also be used as an excipient in pharmaceutical products, subject to applicable regulatory requirements and relevant IPEC guidelines. Permitted applications and conditions of use vary by country.
Monk fruit (Siraitia grosvenorii), also known as Luo Han Guo, is a natural sweetening ingredient. Depending on the format and concentration, monk fruit ingredients can provide a sweetness intensity of up to approx. 250 times that of sugar.
The sweet taste comes from naturally occurring compounds called mogrosides, with mogroside V being one of the main contributors to the fruit’s characteristic sweetness.
Mogroside V provides a clean, well-rounded sweetness profile with fruity notes. It contains zero calories, has no glycaemic impact, remains stable at temperatures of up to 200°C, and does not crystallise at either low or high temperatures. Furthermore, mogroside V does not cause colour variation. This natural sweetener is ideal for applications aimed at reducing sugar and calorie content.
Monk fruit ingredients are available as decoction juice, produced using a traditional, non-selective water extraction process. With a mogroside V content of approximately 1.5%, it delivers around 5 to 6 times the sweetness of sucrose. The ingredient has a complex, natural sensory profile with a broad flavour bouquet. Its non-novel food status makes monk fruit decoction juice a relevant option for sugar-reduction formulations, subject to the applicable requirements for the finished product.
We also offer liquid monk fruit extracts containing 2.0%–3.5% mogroside V, with a sweetness intensity ranging of approximately 8 to 35 times that of sucrose. Fine-powder extracts containing 40% or 50% mogroside V are also available delivering up to 160–200 times that of sucrose. The sweetness may vary depending on the application.
Mogroside-rich monk fruit extracts intended for high intensity sweetening are currently under regulatory assessment in the EU and are not authorised as additive sweeteners. Outside the EU, monk fruit-derived sweetening ingredients are accepted in several markets, including the United States, China and Japan, subject to market-specific ingredient specifications, uses and labelling requirements.
All monk fruit ingredients in our range are non-GMO.
