Nattokinase is a fibrinolytic enzyme derived from natto, the traditional Japanese fermented soybean food. Since its discovery in the 1980s, it has been extensively studied for its role in supporting fibrinolytic activity, healthy circulation and cardiovascular function.
Supporting Nordic manufacturers, we supply high-quality nattokinase for use in food supplements targeting cardiovascular health, vascular function and circulatory support.
Developing effective cardiovascular health supplements starts with selecting ingredients supported by a well-defined mechanism of action. Nattokinase is a well-characterised fibrinolytic enzyme produced through the fermentation of soybeans by Bacillus subtilis var. natto. Its fermentation-derived origin also aligns with consumer interest in naturally sourced ingredients.
Nattokinase is believed to support fibrinolysis through both direct and indirect mechanisms. It can degrade fibrin, the insoluble protein that forms the structural framework of blood clots. Studies also suggest effects on endogenous fibrinolytic pathways involving tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA), urokinase and plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1).
Nattokinase supplementation has been associated with
In a human study (n=43), participants received placebo for 4 weeks, followed by a 1-week washout period and four weeks of supplemention with 1,200 FU Nattokinase per day. During the nattokinase intervention period, blood levels of fibrin degradation products (FDPs) increased, indicating enhanced fibrin breakdown and fibrinolytic activity (figure 1).
These findings support the proposed mechanism of nattokinase in promoting the body’s natural fibrinolytic processes.
We supply nattokinase for high potency applications with activities ranging from 10,000 to 100,000 FU/g targeting healthy blood flow and vascular function.
Nattokinase is suitable for use in hard capsules, softgels and tablets and is typically formulated at 2,000 FU per daily serving. It can be used as a standalone ingredient in cardiovascular health products or combined with other ingredients such as vitamin K2 MK-7 to support health and vascular formulations
Regulatory note: Nattokinase is subject to Novel Food regulation in the EU. Full regulatory documentation is available on request.
