Sharpen your mind with Neuravena
Frutarom’s patented extract from wild green oat improves overall mental fitness and enhances cognitive function
We all use our mental capacity to think every day, making it a very important part of our lives. But, there are many situations when we wish we could think better or stay more concentrated and focused; be it at work, during an exam or at home. The maintenance of the cognitive function even in stressful situations has become increasingly essential in our societies and today, consumers are more than ever looking for natural options to help them keep their mind sharp.
Keeping natural remedies in mind
Searching for safe, healthy and natural solutions you can often find, interesting alternatives in traditionally used plants, such as Avena sativa L. (oats). The cultivation of oats can be traced back thousands of years and oats have always had the reputation of being a health food. Benefits for mental health and cognitive support reported by monographs include mild anti-depressant effects, increased ability to deal with stress, and reduced anxiety [1, 2].
Frutarom has developed Neuravena®, a bioactivity-tested proprietary extract from green oat, which has been proven to be effective in preclinical and human intervention studies.
Bioassay-guided product development smoothed the way for an effective extract
Frutarom has screened multiple accessions of Avena sativa L. in in vitro assays of the central nervous system (CNS) and scientifically selected an exclusive type green oat variety showing characteristic activity and safety. The accession chosen for extract manufacturing exhibited a specific high inhibition of two CNS enzymes : monoamine oxidase B (MAO-B) and phosphodiesterase 4 (PDE4). Both enzymes are suggested to be closely related to mental health and cognitive function by playing a modulatory role in anxiety, memory, and depression [4, 5].
Human studies confirm improved mental fitness, concentration and cognitive performance
Committed to strong product science, Frutarom has supported several research programs during the last years. A recently published double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled crossover study assessed human electric brain activity during mental work to determine acute effects of ingested oat herb extract on mental fitness and stress coping behaviour .
In another study, Neuravena® was shown to acutely improve attention and concentration as well as the ability to maintain task focus in older adults .
Green oat extract supplementation has further been reported to improve vasodilator function in systemic and cerebral arteries in older adults . Enhanced cerebral vasodilator function is suggested to contribute to improvements of human cognition  and currently discussed as a key mechanism to prevent the formation of detrimental markers of neurodegenerative diseases such as AD.
A further study investigating the effect of Neuravena® for smoking reduction reported reductions in self-reported tobacco consumption, and it indicated that it may be also effective in counteracting adverse psychological effects and the decline in work performance which are often observed when smoking is reduced .
A new current placebo-controlled, double-blind, randomised cross-over study investigated the effects of Neuravena® on the cognitive performance using the Computerised Mental Performance Assessment System (COMPASS). These study findings confirm the previously demonstrated benefits of Neuravena® on acute improvement of cognitive function and demonstrate for the first time efficacy for an 800 mg dosage .
Based on the efficacy and safety confirmed by proprietary studies, products containing Neuravena® green oat extract can be positioned either for the enhancement of overall mental fitness, or as a support of cognitive performance in stressful situations.
New launch: Alziberry
Frutarom has just launched Alziberry, an extract of blackcurrant (Ribes nigrum) obtained using Membrane Enrichment Technology, that targets the cognitive decline market.
